HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKE FRANKLIN!
12/30/12
Today we went to Vince's in Lancaster to help
our friend Mike celebrate his birthday.
The Franklins
Chris - Dad - Matt - Mom and of course our godson Sammy!
Jerry and Me with the boys
These guys sure have a lot of energy!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LARRY!
12/26/12
On the Saturday after Christmas we went to Palm Springs to visit Jerry's brother Larry. He was definitely happy to see us and the comfort food we brought him. :)
We went to lunch at Mimi's Cafe (as big as the menu was we all decided on the Golden Chicken Dijon lunch combo - YUMMY!) It came with soup or salad and a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert.
After lunch we went across the street to walk around at the outdoor mall.
It rained cats and dogs on the way down there but while we were in Palm Springs the air was crisp and clean. On the way back home we saw new snow in the hills and had more rain. I'm glad Jerry is such a good driver!

The mall here was very pretty. Next trip down I would like to
eat at one of the outdoor restaurants (once the weather is warmer)!

CHRISTMAS DAY
12/25/12
Christmas festivities this year were hosted by Lorraine at Mom's house. The feeling was that this would cause her the least disruption and also would most likely be the last Walinski Family Christmas celebration at #10 Lassen Street. Mom will be moving to Emeritus in Chatsworth in January to benefit from the socialization and activities that are provided there. I will include more about that next month ~ January of 2013.
For now I will say that we had a great Christmas Day. The house was full of love and laughter and we could all feel Dad's spirit there with us.

Hi Mom!
Geno has definitely gone through a transformation since last Christmas.
Keep up the great work!
Nicole worked really hard on this memorial display for Grandma
using Grandpa's funeral flag and his buttons and pins from the last 50 years as a
SJE parishioner and ASC member. She also included some flowers from the funeral arrangements
and some of his Army (Korean War veteran) pins and patches. We'll have to
find a very special place for this in Mom's new home!

VISITING ARIZONA - PAM & DAVE'S K OF C CHRISTMAS PARTY
12/8/12
For the last few years we had been hearing about the Knights of Columbus Christmas Party & Gift Exchange hosted by Dave & Pam Cassone. We all became fast friends when we were in the Fr. Serra Knights of Columbus group together. Plus they are the ONLY couple we know who were married on the same day and time we were = 6/26/76 = 11 AM! We even used the same colors for our bridal parties (peach and brown {sooo 70's!!!}).
This year we were able to put the party on our schedule and make the trip to Mesa, AZ. Their house was decorated beautifully as was the back yard and there were plenty of people there (about 75!) to enjoy the fun!

FILMORE CHRISTMAS TREE TRAIN
12/2/12
It was a chilly, rainy day when we went to ride the Filmore Christmas Tree Train but God blessed us with a few hours of dry - in fact even romping through the "forest" wasn't too bad. I was dreading the mud but it had stopped raining long enough to have a good surface to walk on. We boarded the train and rode the few miles to the Santa Paula Christmas Tree Farm, chose the tree, and Jerry and Mike cut it down with the saws that were provided. When I find those pictures I will post more.
When we got back to the train station and loaded up the tree then it started raining again for the trip back to Mike & Nicole's. The guys put up the tree and then we had some yummy lasagna and garlic bread - just perfect for this weather!

THANKSGIVING DAY - DAD'S BIRTHDAY
11/22/12
This was our first Thanksgiving ever since you went to heaven Dad. That combined with the fact that it would have been your 82nd birthday made getting together today even more important to us! We will NEVER stop missing you! Thanks for all the little "I'm still with you even though you can't see me" signs you have sent to me over the past year.
Mimi & Bob roasted a couple of turkeys and Chris' girlfriend Jenn brought a honey baked ham. Nicole made pumpkin bars and Mary tried her hand at making pumpkin pies from scratch! If anyone didn't get enough to eat it was their OWN FAULT. Ha ha. :)

SIMI KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS THANKSGIVING MEMORIAL DINNER
11/15/12
Every year the Knights get together to remember their "missing" brothers. The Simi Valley Knights did that this year with a yummy turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
Mike was working but Nicole & Mikey came over to the hall to join us. It is ALWAYS nice to have them with us! :)
Hold on Mom... I'm checking my raffle tickets!

ALL SOUL'S DAY - ST. JOHN EUDES
11/2/12
Sorry I didn't take any pictures but the bereavement ministry hosted a memorial mass for all the members of SJE who had passed away during the last year. The mass and the music were beautiful and each family went up to the altar when their loved ones' names were called and picked up the candle that had been lighted during the mass.
My BFF until she moved to Santa Paula in junior high
This was taken on one of our walks from her house on Lassen Street
to my house at 9673 Keokuk Avenue
along the fence for Superior Street School in Chatsworth
Someone that I never expected to see was in attendance at the mass also - a childhood friend, Yolanda Salazar, whose mom had also passed away in the last year. There was a reception in the hall after the mass so we were able to chat for a few minutes in there and catch up. What a nice surprise it was to see her after all these (40?) years!

11/2/12
Also on this date we were babysitting Mikey because Nicole's friend got married and Nicole was in the wedding. Don't Nicole & Mike make a great looking couple?

TRUNK-R-TREATING AT ST. JOHN EUDES
10/27/12
Where it all started! SJE Catholic Church has been doing "Trunk-R-Treating" for many years (at least since the 90's). Chris, Dennis and Nicole even participated in this event a few times! Jerry was the original organizer of this event at Fr. Serra Parish in Quartz Hill and it caught on and grew like wildfire! Then when he transferred to the Lancaster Knights (affiliated with Sacred Heart Parish in Lancaster) he began the tradition there. Last I heard there were a couple hundred attendees in 2012! Thanks Dad ~ and Thanks Jerry!
Here is a picture of Jerry and Mikey taken at Mikey's first Trunk-R-Treating experience. They even had a professional photographer there taking pictures for a nominal charge and putting them into frames! Nicole did a wonderful job of putting this Mickey Mouse costume together! :)
MIKEY - GETTING READY FOR SOME HALLOWEEN FUN!
10/20/12
What a joy it is when we get to spend time with our little Mikey! Nicole & Mike had gone away so we got him for the whole weekend!
Here are some pictures from the Pumpkin Patch by the Simi Town Center Mall. What a colorful place for a photo op!

STEVE'S WEDDING
9/15/12
Yeah!!! A Family Wedding!!!
Steve and Jennifer got married on an incredibly warm afternoon in September, surrounded by many friends and family members. The wedding and reception were held at Huron Station in Los Angeles and there was no A/C but we all had a great time! (Jerry and I didn't have A/C at our wedding reception either but we didn't know in January when we gave the deposit check ~ we didn't know until we got there at noon on one of the hottest days of the year 6/26/76 and asked how to turn it on!)

CONGRATULATIONS GENE!
7/29/12
Today my brother Gene was installed as Grand Knight at the Simi Valley Knights of Columbus council #5803. Dad would be SO very proud of him! Gene obviously inherited our awesome Dad's constant desire to participate wherever he could, to have the best possible influence on as many people as he could over his lifetime - CCD teacher, scout leader, SJE men's club president, IGO president, ASC state president, faithful choir member, fill-in altar server, personal Mr. Fix-It (including tractor maintenance) for the Sacred Heart Sisters in Chatsworth, helping maintain the school grounds at SJE into his 80's (lovingly known as the "Eudes Dudes"), tutor, mentor, role model, etc. etc. etc.! Gene has been steadily involved in teaching confirmation preparation classes at St. Rose and is well respected by many young people. Now he has taken on the responsibilities of Grand Knight. Congratulations! I know the Lord is pretty happy with the job you are doing!
The installation took place at St. Rose of Lima Church in Simi and then we went to the Knights Hall for the yummy dinner and dessert.

Sergio's in Chatsworth was one of Mom & Dad's favorite restaurants. We didn't want to let the day pass without some acknowledgement of its importance. VACATION TO HUNTINGTON LAKE
7/19 - 7/22/12
Our vacation this year was limited to an extended weekend camping trip to Huntington Lake with friends, the Cassones and the Billeters. Chris and his friend Amy also came up to spend the last 2 nights with us on the return from their trip to ________. They had gone down there with books and toys for the children in a couple of the orphanages and Chris helped the nuns with their honey-do's.
The "road" used to get here from the town of Shaver Lake was definitely an experience -- a
one-lane, pothole filled dirt fire road where we often had to get to the inside (whew!) or the outside (yikes! - the drop off was QUITE steep) to allow another vehicle to pass!
Once we arrived in the parking lot and found the trail, we had to walk across part of the river on a log. (Definitely out of MY comfort zone!) And poor Pam absolutely refused. She and Dave ended up spending the time in a nice pool that was in the same parking lot! After we got across the log we had to hike up a marshy hill (I had to wash my shoes and socks when we got back to camp) and across a meadow. The "springs" were cemented squares in the middle of the meadow. Some had been capped and some were not.

On Saturday morning we set out for a hike. First we walked around the shore of the lake and then ended up on the road. I wish I would have been wearing my pedometer because I'm sure by the time we (finally) got back to camp we had gone several miles! The dogs were definitely barking! But in the end I was so proud of myself for not giving up. Jerry and Chris kept offering to go ahead and come back with the truck but I hung in there and, even though it took a L-O-N-G time, I finished the race! :)
